Three shot near Verizon Center in downtown D.C. Three shot near Verizon Center in downtown D.C.
(35 minutes later)
Three men were shot and wounded Friday night in the heart of downtown Washington, the police said. At least three men were shot and wounded Friday night in the heart of downtown Washington amid heavy Halloween police patrols. A fourth person was injured nearby, but it was unclear if he was shot.
The shooting occurred a few minutes after 10 p.m. at 7th and F Streets NW. All three men were conscious and breathing immediately after the shooting, said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman. The three men were wounded at about 10 p.m. at 7th and F Streets NW near the Verizon Center. One was hit near the shoulder, D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said, and the others were apparently grazed. It was “kind of shocking” for anyone to be “brazen enough” to open fire with police on every corner, she said.
The site is near the Verizon Center and Chinatown, as well as many other dining and entertainment attractions. Officers stopped people near the scene and at least one weapon was seized, Lanier said.
No information was available about the circumstances. The other incident in the downtown area was reported near 3rd and H Streets NW. Few details were available. A witness said he saw two groups of people fighting with each other and heard shots.
