Should we pay extra tax for rubbish disposal?

More than 30 local authorities are fitting microchips to wheelie bins in a bid to work out how much households are throwing away.

The move is an attempt to encourage more recycling and curb the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfill.

Later this year, the Local Government Association is expected to propose councils be given greater powers to change the way people remove rubbish.

Should councils be given powers to charge households for getting rid of non-recyclable rubbish? Do you live in any of the areas affected? What can be done to improve waste recycling? Send us your views.

To Andrew Howlett, Manchester
If I find a bug in my bin it will go straight back to the council offices.

My bin had a 'chip, the enphasis on HAD. If you have the same wheelie bins as me, the 'chip is at the front under the rim inside a circular recess

Good idea then they can charge us for how much we dispose of! I didn't know you were in the council ideas group.

Microwave the bug for 1 second in a microwave. Too long and it will show burn marks, just long enough to zap its antenna.

Jackie Scott,

Can you read?

My post is against this tax, as presumably are you being a tory. I make no suggestions of laziness. I recycle and I'll bet your carbon footprint is higher than mine. Your post is needlessly offensive, so get some perspective and actually read comments and try to understand them before posting such tripe.

This is brilliant. Britain's Tories/Conservatives have turned into the unrealistic, grabbing little scroungers that they used to accuse single mums and benefit claimants of being. The points here are even sillier than the pap Labour people on the street were talking in 78 and 79. Full circle! Hilarious. You know what: Thatcherism didn't make the UK more middle class: it made the middle classes working class - and the knee-jerk reaction continues!

I support this. I don't think we pay enough tax. I would vote for any party who increases our taxes and then puts it to good use. Improving the health service, the police, the roads, the environment. Isn't that we what we all want? The trouble is so many of the idiots on here want all this but aren't prepared to pay for it. "What! Me? Nothing to do with me!"

Fat people cause more fuel to be used in cars, they use more space on the tube, they eat more and so produce more sewage waste. These microchips should be installed into fat people, an additional tax would be levied per day for every Kg over a predefined limit.

I like others are already paying to have my rubbish taken away through Council Tax. Like others I got fed up with a poor collection service where general waste is only collected fortnightly... My tip for the day is.... On alternate weeks just cover the general waste in the green wheelie bin with a few grass cuttings and it all gets collected! ;-)

We recycle as much as possible and are given plastic boxes for the recycled waste. These weight upto 22kg meaning many people cannot lift them. I currently sell to the public a set of wheels (ezi-wheels)which simply attach to the base of the box (no tools reqd)which then allows it to be pulled around extremely easily even when extremely full.
It is estimated that £18m/annum could be saved from reducing assisted lifts currently undertaken by councils, but their take up rate is very slow. We should be encouraging more recycling for adults, disabled and children alike and making it easier to do, not trying to add extra charges to our already greatly taxed house hold.

Of course we should all pay in proportion to the amount of rubbish that we produce. But councils are proposing to add charges on top of already inflated council tax bills. It would be better to incentivise people to recycle more by giving a DISCOUNT against council tax bills on a stepped basis. But the public sector is wedded to a punitive approach to change, rather than a motivational one. This is based in 1950s thinking about animal behaviour that has been entirely dicredited. Encourage us, don't punish us!

And do you seriously believe that if councils did save money as you say then *us* the council tax payers will benefit? They will just become even more reckless with our hard-earned cash.

Serena A

You'll benefit in the respect that the extra costs won't be passed onto *you* or that you local public services won't be cut to pay for it.

In addition, if you're so unhappy with the 'reckless' way your council spends money, why don't you do soemthing about it? How about lobbying support from like minded inviduals an stand as an independent? It's easy to moan, much harder to try and be positive and think of solution to difficult problems.

The only possible action I can think of is to TRY and change shopping-habits, and hope main suppliers swing round quickly when they see where money is going. As usual this will be far easier for the rich than the poor, and comes back to the dreaded 'IF' (as in IF we all did X Y or Z then things would be etc. etc. etc). Britain is not noted for it's cohesive actions however, and boycott is fine if there IS an alternative.
