Spanish fashion retailers are going to change their clothing sizes for women and bring in bigger shop mannequins.

It is part of a government initiative which aims to reduce girls’ anxiety over body image.

More than 8,000 women will be measured and sizes will be standardised to reflect Spain’s growing population.

Spain also banned ultra-thin models on the catwalk during Madrid fashion week last September.

Should other countries follow Spain? Can the size of shop mannequins affect girls’ self esteem? Do you find it difficult to find clothes that fit? Do clothes shops have a responsibility to promote healthy body sizes? Send us your comments.

just one small contribution about this size 16 marilyn monroe's debate...once I saw some of her outfit in a cinema exibition and...sorry, guys but she was no way a size 16. Some of her dresses would not fit me in the waist and I am a size 10...I reckon she was a size 12 at most.
Her shoes were size 3! can imagine a size 16 woman wearing a size 3 pair of shoes? no way...she was not a size 16, not a modern size 16 as least.

Personally, I prefer to have a relationship with a woman that is intelligent, well educated, and honest; but all things being equal, I do prefer one that has some flesh on her bones! The changes that are taking place in Spain's haute couture industry are simply an acknowledgment of the reality that most women are not anorexic.

[Corruptuser], United States

I would suggest that it is you who are lacking in brain cells as you are unable to see past your own biased point of view. There is not one universal 'perfect weight' which can be applied to everyone. Women like me, at 5ft1, can be healthy at 7 stone, whilst those at 6ft can't

"I blame the gays! I blame the gays!" It must be more complicated than screaming queens who don't want to sleep with their models. What about all the heterosexual or female designers?

The fact is, most women want to be slimmer rather than fatter and if you want to sell something, you fit it to the punters' aspirations. With a car you fill it with bikini-models, with a dress, you stick a size zero in it. Realism is irrelevant. If most women wanted to gain weight the models would be obese.
