Is traffic noise driving you to distraction?

North East city Newcastle is the noisiest urban area in England, with residents facing severe hearing and health problems, according to a new report.

The city topped a traffic noise table with 80.4 decibels – roughly equivalent of a loud alarm clock constantly ringing. Tranquil Torquay, in the south of the country, emerged as the quietest at just 60 decibels.

Report author Professor Deepak Prasher said noise is not only annoying, but can raise stress levels and threaten health and well-being.

What is your city like? What other urban noises drive you mad? Do you agree with the report's findings? Is it time to tackle noise pollution? Send us your views and experiences.

The most annoying aspect of traffic noise has to be the boy racers with windows wound down, subjecting us to awful music. However, I usually find a lighted cigarette flung into the car sorts them out.

They most annoying cause of noise pollution in Cardiff (as i'm sure it's the case in most cities across the UK) is idiotic drunk morons staggering around town who think shouting and singing random drivel makes them look good. Also, teen chavs riding those stupid scooters everywhere.

You want to tackle noise pollution? Start by tackling stupid people, preferrably in the literal rugby sense.

"You want to come here to Sandhurst.
Amongst the (acceptable) gun shots (training our future Officers) every evening, the ASBO's next door are far more annoying and loud than a fleet of tanks.
But obviously I'm not paying enough council tax to get BFBC to get off their back sides and do anything about it."

Ian, as a fellow Sandhurst resident, I feel your pain. The local (Tory) council are useless.

Darlington has come fourth in this, yet the town has endured many months of traffic congestion, and 'roadworks' in the town centre which is being pedestrianised. I wonder if that was taken into account?

I am sure my community will be use to it each time there is a headline about Tony and his involvement directly or indirectly with matters like the "BAE and Saudi arm deal" or "cash for honours enquiry". It is easy to wind up Muslims and to use them as scapegoats for Tony's benefit!

Ironic that the BBC should run a forum on noise considering the shameful silence on the issues raised by the Undercover Mosque documentary. There has yet to be a single topic on the Birmingham terror raids or the reaction by the Muslim community, despite these stories being front page news every day. Perhaps someone should remind the BBC that it exists for the benefit of license-fee payers, not as a tool to spin out the government line on community relations.

Having been to both Newcastle and Bombay several times, I can honestly say that Bombay noise is worse.....but so is Bombay filth. While Newcastle's urban noise is a mix of charming city sounds, Bombay noise seems to blare for the pointless sake of blaring. But for me, the real issue is urban filth. Newcastle is not filthy, but Bombay and every other city in India are caked with filth of all kinds. Those cities stink as no others can. It's cultural.
