President Ahmadinejad has announced that the captured British sailors and marines have been pardoned and will be freed.

He repeated allegations that the British sailors and marines "invaded" Iranian waters, but said they would be freed as a "gift" to Britain.

He made the announcement at a news conference, in which he also awarded medals to the commanders who captured the British personnel in the Gulf.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "We welcome what the President has said about the release of our 15 personnel. We are now establishing exactly what this
means in terms of the method and timing of their release."

What is your reaction to the news? Is this proof that diplomacy has worked? What impact will this have on relations between Iran and Britain? Send us your thoughts and experiences.

Perhaps now that the Naval Party has been released our great British government will take some decisive action against the warmongering Iranians. Lets start by throwing every single Iranian passport holder off British territory and perhaps we can build up to an entire economic freeze on Iran.

What a generous gift from Iran! How wonderful that the benevolent Mr. Ahmadinejad would return the tresspassing British peacekeepers to their rightful sovereignty. This action fully demonstrates how 'reasonable' Iran really is!

If you believe any of the above nonsense you could well be entirely delusional, detached from reality, a muffin short of a dozen, daft, whacko, bonkers, unhinged, or simply a Liberal Democrat.

The UK has been played like a fiddle ... now Iran knows it can smack around one of the world's greatest powers any time it wants with no repercussions.

The kidnapping of your soldiers was an act of war, It’s clear the UK prefers appeasement to protecting its own people.

Do you realize Iran doesn't see you as waving a flag of peace? It's a flag of submission and surrender. Go ahead, continue to congratulate yourselves.

We should thank Iran for their "gift" by sending a "gift of our own.....maybe a few hundred "gifts" armed with low yeild tactical bunker busting nukes. The President of Iran will not have to clean his shoes for years after all the boot licking he has received from western gloablists and closet communists. How far has the British Empire fallen? This is what you get when your Navy is reduced to the size of that of Belgium's. And Royal Marines? Smiling and mugging for the cameras? Shaking the hand of that two bit troll Ahmadinejad? Contrast their behaviour to that of the British airman who were captured and beaten up by Saddam's thugs during the first Gulf War. Those airmen showed displayed a sense of honour, not gleeful apeasement.

How soon have people here forgotten the pictures of soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison; piled up naked, wired up to live wires; paraded naked on televison! And here I see, smiling soldiers with suits on and returning to their families.
And still we talk about these soldiers being humilited. This world will be a much peaceful place, if all human life is valued the same and not only the rich and powerful.

I cant believe all these people praising Iran. If Iran hadn't illegally imprisoned our people in the first place they wouldnt need releasing. I wonder if all their equipment will be returned?

If (and it still is IF) they're released we should get them on TV to say how they were treated and whose waters they were REALLY in, then we can change the rules of engagement so next time Islamic guards turn up to arrest our people we can blow them out of the water and get a GPS fix on the bits.

Respect for others is fundamental in the promotion of peaceful co-existence. The notion that nothing good could ever come out of Iran, Syria, Zimbabawe and other countries that the west are not comfortable with. The problem is not always the citizens but the leaders who refuse to listen to the voices of their citizenry. Let the Western Leaders open up for honest and sincere dialogue with Iran, Syria and Zimbabwe for the betterment of humanity. Kudos to Iran and the Marines for showing the way.

Our sailors are back great news. But, the experiences they had, as did the hostages in 2004 follow no convention. These people are barbarric and have no right to be treated with respect. We should not attempt to keep them in touch with the civilised world.

They're hostile, we should not allow troops to leave without backup, that includes radar and air cover. Afterall the Iranians were hostile forces in another countries water, we were there to protect. They made us look so powerfull!!

After hearing what the British soldiers REALLY went through, the West has to ask itself:
Is the Iranian regime capable of civilized "dialogue" that the world wants so badly for President Bush to have with them? The answer is a resounding NO. And Bush knows this. They are a third world country, and that's exactly how they act. The regime are savages, and I feel empathy for the decent Iranian people who find this whole thing UNcivilized and have to live under this kind of "leadership".

"I, as an indivual, and we, as a nation, should say a heartfelt Thank You to the Iranians for the release of our people. I wonder if it is possible to say a thank you via the Iran Ambassador in London?

G.P.Winn - Mrs., Hull"

I sometimes wonder if I'm on the same planet as some of the people on HYS. Why should we thank them for freeing people they'd kidnapped? IMO a strategically-placed cruise missile would be the best way of thanking the ambassador or any other member of this sick regime!

Actually Tom Riley from Cardiff, I can tell you the difference between Iran and the USA. For starters, the USA is a democratic republic whose citizens elect its government. Iran, on the other hand, is a backwards theocracy run by a pack of nitwits who believe they are descendents of Mohammed. If you need any further information, consult your local library.

It is astonishing to see the ignorant British lie so shamelessly. Instead of being gracious and filled with gratitude for the release of their men, the British government is making them speak lies. What are you doing in the Persian gulf anyway - get back to your tiny island and stay there. While I do not agree with Iran especially their President's irresponsible comments, Iran respect in the world for their kind gesture, whereas the British (true to their past) continue to lie and cheat. Shame!

This is my 2nd post, fascinating the BBC who are such passive liberals themselves, did not post my first one. Your Navy soldiers are pathetic wimps and have disgraced your country, if you listen to the Iranian broadcasts, they fornicated in such a way that was unnecessary and truly embarrassing. Hero's ? give me a break, cowards more likely.

Thank God it was the Iranians that captured the marines. If it had been the US instead then who knows when they would have been released

Chris Adams, Blackburn

Chris, they wouldn't be released and they would have been systemically tortured and paraded naked and the women raped and then killed in front of her families and kids. Sorry she didn't have her family with her. But I think you get the picture!

Everyone seems to focus on Iran winning the PR battle through their 'Easter gift', yet nobody has thought to remind the world that post-revolutionary Iran killed a serving British police officer on the streets of London (Yvonne Fletcher). Their President cut his diplomatic teeth with the US Embassy Hostages in the 80's and yet wants his country to assume a position on the world stage as a mature, responsible nation with a nuclear capability.
Time I think to slap them down hard.

So Irans not as bad as everybody thinks. The soldiers were treated humanely and not as US treated people in Abu Gharib. And now they are being released instead of killing them as US did. So infact Irans better than US.

Amit, Delhi

Not a bit, Amit. Abu Graib was filled with animals that killed innocent people. And, your blanket statement is completely incorrect, only a few animals died in custody. Pull your head out of the sand.

It is your country that is in ongoing political, economic and moral(you preach something that you very selectively do) decline. What hight can you judge anybody else from? 4 years of Iraq occupation revealed the true face of so called figting for democracy force that uses dubious, to put it mildly, means.

Inna, Amman, Jordan

Hhaha, sounds like your request for a greencard got turned down. Sour grapes.

Lets see, the Iranians kills a British police women from their embassy 20 years ago and gets away with with it. Iran provides ammunition for suicide bombs that kill British soldiers. Now Iranians held hostage 15 sailors and Britain begs for Iran's forgiveness. I am liberal but this blindsided British Political Correctness gets to me. I suspect the easiest transition will be for Amdinijad to become the UK's next PM to be PC.

To all of the non-UK posters: it's one thing for British people to criticise our armed forces and the possibly too-compliant way in which these individuals acted; it's quite another when you do it. Butt out and keep your opinions to yourselves. I wouldn't dream of criticising an armed force of another country.
