"The majority of people want places like Tesco. Why?" John McCarroll
...for the same reasons that the majority of people do anything... they're thick and they do what they are told. It's tragic.

"One of Labour's chief adviser is also a Tesco employee, this shouldn't be allowed." [Janedarc], London,"
Oh dear, Oh dear, one member of the fairer sex provides us with the most sagacious posting ever to grace this chat-room - and now another offers us perhaps the most assinine.
Could it have escaped her notice that until November last year Lord Sainsbury was a member of that very same Labour government. Should that have been allowed???

It must have been a rose garden.
Full of pr1cks!
Some of you have been disillusioned since 97, some of us had no illusions to start with.
When a politician says “Hey, trust me, I’m a pretty decent guy,” hang onto your wallet.
He’s guaranteed to be a con-man, a thief, a liar and a fool..

Welcome old boy - so when do you fellows start discussing which supermarket does the best champagne - because that the only type of socialists we have around here.
Robert Sharr, London, United Kingdom
I get mine from an internet supplier, very reasonably priced it is too. You are right though, I remember sitting in a friend's garden drinking a very nice port and smoking a fine havana to celebrate the 1997 victory. Iraq and ID cards have tarnished the memory somewhat, but still happy days.

Actually a tax credit is only returning tax that should never have been taken in the first place. It is hardly Tesco's fault that people are taxed too much
[HyperPolitico]
Actually its just another benefit by a different name. A friand of mine gets more tax credits a week than they pay in tax

And John, my dear fellow, don't forget the drudge-head Mail ranters like you who claim that they can't say what they want because they'll rightly be called racist.
Every little helps - especially when you pretend to be many people.

Afternoon all had a horrible day. Still better than the horrible stuff over the pond.
RE: Debate. I am a Sainsbury's man myself. Tesco always seem to be on the news but good for them. Right home time!

You stopped going on about Unions once you stopped being Phil B but it was obvious

Why does the tax payer have to fund the NHS to stomach pump the idiot who goes out and gets wasted each weekend.
And then pay for their liver treatment a few years down the line.

£2.55 billion profit eh?
Well it sounds nice, until you remember that they STOLE their profit by screwing farmers and 3rd world workers.
Behind the scenes Tesco batters it's suippliers into oblivion so that smug little share-holders can pat their back pocket.
Your cheap coffee, bananas, clothes, houseware etc. is cheap because millions are virtual slaves.

God be with all those that have suffered in this wretched tragedy. It's time to say a prayer not verbally assault all that is the USA. I for one like my American cousins and hope that they are left to try and grieve. I have kissed my two kids and said a blessing for them, i thank God I still can. I am so sorry for all your losses in this senseless attack. I hope you find a way of coping with this ever increasing problem. My the light of the heavens remain on you always and keep you all safe.

Once again you floor me with your superior wit and intellect. Isn't it funny that the rightwhingers are endlessly complaining about being insulted, when one simply rebuts their arguments, yet are quite happy to descend to homophobic filth themselves.
Is Tesco taking over the high street?
tesco are way too big.
even though their range is massive, i actually prefer food (ie fruit/veg, not 'plastic') from the smaller retailers. they may charge more, but generally offer better quality.
where possible, i avoid tesco like the plague - i would sooner go without than contribute to their criminal profits.
and terry leahy is a reprehensible, contemptible little runt.

Why do people that eat "organic" sound so smug?
" I don't use Tesco - only the local Organic Fruit market "
These people rank in smugness alongside Environmentalists, Anti War Lobbyists, vegetarians and sandal wearing Guardian reading fence sitters.
Tesco reigns supreme, I think most people should read case studies before they make wild accusations about wages, bad working conditions and the like.
They should be applauded and used as a sound business model for others to copy.

Is the BBC taking over broadcasting?
The UK’s biggest broadcaster has announced record spending that equates to nearly £150 per person, whether you watch it or not.
Critics say that the BBC, takes lots of money from people but gives very little in return.
Some bod from the BBC said, "The BBC is excellent. It charges its customers exactly what they want to pay and gives them propaganda in return."
Critics say that Tesco, who has a 31% market share, ruins high street diversity and forces independent shops out of business.
Kevin Hawkins, head of the British Retail Consortium, said that supermarkets simply give shoppers “lower prices, better value and more choice."
What do you think of the retailer’s profits? Should it be praised for its success? Is Tesco a damaging influence or is it giving people what they want? Has your community been affected by a big supermarket?
