A rare copy of the Magna Carta has been given its own first-class seat on a flight from the UK to the USA.

The 1217 version, on loan from Hereford Cathedral, is now on display at a New York City museum on the 800th anniversary of the historic document.

Originally issued by King John in 1215, it was modified and reissued in subsequent years.

It established for the first time the principle that everyone, including the king, was subject to the law.

A spokesperson for British Airways called the flight "a first for first-class".

The copy has embarked on a global tour which will include displays in China, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal and Singapore.

The New-York Historical Society will be the only US venue to exhibit the document, where it will stay until 30 September.
