A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Japan after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off its south-western coast. A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has struck off Japan's south-western coast, triggering a small tsunami.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said waves of up to one metre (3ft) could hit the western coast of Kagoshima prefecture and Satsunan islands. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said a 30cm (1ft) tsunami was registered on the southern Nakanoshima island, part of Kagoshima prefecture.
It said the quake happened at the depth of about 10km (six miles). There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The US Geological Survey said the tremor struck some 159km south-west of the town of Makurazaki. A tsunami warning issued for Kagoshima and Satsunan islands was later lifted. The quake happened at a depth of about 10km (six miles).
"Get out of the water and leave the coast immediately," the JMA's warning said. The US Geological Survey said it was some 159km south-west of the town of Makurazaki.
"As the strong current will continue, do not get in the sea or approach coasts until the advisory is cleared," it added.
