Nigeria’s military cannot meet the president’s December deadline to crush Boko Haram’s Islamist uprising, a government spokesman said Thursday. The spokesman, Yusuf Anas of the Center for Crisis Communication, said that the deadline “may be unrealistic” and that December was not a “sacrosanct date when all suicide bombings will end.” In June, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the military to crush the insurgency by December, but the extremists have pushed back. On Wednesday, gunmen suspected of being Boko Haram militants raided a town in Niger, killing 18 people, officials said. |
