2015-16 Basketball preview: Virginia Conference 5 girls
Version 0 of 1. Top teams Oakton (27-2), Chantilly (18-8), Westfield (13-10), Herndon (9-13) Top players: G Mary Clougherty, Chantilly, 6-0, Jr. G Alex Marquis, Oakton, 5-7, Sr. F Maddie Royle, Oakton, 6-1, Jr. G Indeya Sanders, Herndon, 5-6, Jr. Skinny: Losing leading scorer Lindsey Abed hurts, but Oakton is more than equipped to deal with the loss. Royle (11 points per game) gives the Cougars shot blocking and inside scoring, fellow junior Delaney Connolly (10 ppg) has a variety of post moves, and Marquis (12 ppg) hit 49 threes last year. Oakton has a legitimate shot to repeat as conference and 6A North region champs. . . . Chantilly has a rough road ahead after losing second-leading scorer Shawnice Gresham, whose family moved to the Herndon district, and junior Simone Jefferies, who has decided to focus on other sports. But Clougherty, a dynamic athlete who averaged 12 points per game last year, can keep the Chargers in any contest. . . . Herndon is looking to break through with Sanders (15 ppg) leading the charge. American, Drexel and William and Mary have all offered the versatile guard. Seniors Sabrina Tolbert and Allison Guengerich are retruning starters, while Gresham adds a proven threat in the frontcourt. Junior transfer Janiece Loney was Robinson’s leading scorer last year. . . . Westfield only graduated one senior last season, leading scorer Emily McNamara. Little sister Nicole, a sophomore guard, leads the returning class. High school girls’ basketball preview Whatever happened to the neighborhood basketball team?
