Israel demolishes homes of 3 Palestinian attackers Gaza fishermen head to sea after Israel expands fishing zone
(about 3 hours later)
JERUSALEM — Israeli security forces demolished the West Bank homes of three Palestinians early Monday who killed an Israeli officer and seriously wounded another in Jerusalem in February, the military said. JERUSALEM — Gaza fishermen have returned from a 15-hour sail after Israel expanded the fishing zone from six to nine nautical miles.
In February’s attack outside Jerusalem’s Old City, according to Israeli authorities, three Palestinian men in their early 20’s drew rifles and knives and attacked two female officers during a security check, killing a 19-year-old officer. They were killed by Israeli officers at the scene. The head of the Gaza fishermen’s union Zakareya Bakr said Monday’s haul was still rather paltry, with some 280 boats snatching up an average of eight kilograms (17 Ibs.) each. He said the catch included red mullet, sea bream, grouper and some small rays.
Israel argues that home demolitions are an effective tool to deter attacks, but critics say the tactic amounts to collective punishment. To prevent squabbling over fishing rights, Hamas the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza ordered that whoever reaches a new spot first can claim fishing rights in the area.
Also Monday, the military reported an Israeli soldier was stabbed and wounded in central Israel, and that forces were searching for the attacker, but later said it was checking the possibility that it was a false report. Israel set a limit in 2007 after Hamas seized Gaza from forces loyal to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in bloody street battles. The new maritime perimeter expands the fishing zone off parts of Gaza.
Palestinian attacks in the last six months have killed 28 Israelis and two Americans, and at least 188 Palestinians have died by Israeli fire. Israel says most were attackers, and the rest died in clashes with Israeli security forces.
