Universities pride themselves on their reputations, but potential students were just as likely to be impressed by the thickness of the mattresses and quality of the kitchens in their halls of residence. Having a focus on university helps provide the rationale for working hard and doing well at GCSEs, which is the strongest predictor of success in higher education,” said Mary Curnock Cook, Ucas’s chief executive.
