The defendants spoke only to confirm they understood the charges against them during the 10-minute hearing. They were not required to enter a plea.
The Recorder of Birmingham, Judge Frank Chapman, told them:
"This is just the beginning of the case against you.
"The prosecution have about eight weeks to assemble all the evidence they will rely on."
The judge added that the process would take a little longer than usual because of the number of experts that would needed to be consulted.
