Glasgow murder inquiries continue Glasgow murders 'not connected'
(about 2 hours later)
Investigations are continuing into the murders of two women in separate attacks in Glasgow. The "brutal" murders of two women in Glasgow within 24 hours are not connected, detectives have said.
The city's Queen's Park remains closed following the "brutal and violent" death of Moira Jones, 40, whose body was found there on Thursday morning. The partially-clothed body of Moira Jones, 40, was discovered in Queen's Park on Thursday morning.
Trainee manager Eleni Pachou was found dead inside Di Maggio's pizzeria in the west end of the city early on Friday. On Friday morning, trainee manager Eleni Pachou, 25, was found stabbed to death in a restaurant kitchen.
Police are expected to release more details on both of the investigations later. Police said they were looking at known sex offenders in the Queen's Park area. They said robbery was a possible motive for Ms Pachou's murder.
Ms Jones, who lived near to the park, was found by a ranger on Thursday morning. Senior officers said it was clear the murders were carried out by different people, because they involved different methods and motives.
Some items of her clothing had been removed. Police have not ruled out a sexual motive for the attack. Ms Pachou, who was originally from Greece, met an "horrific" death, police said.
She was described as a respectable business woman who worked as a sales consultant for Britvic. Detectives believe she was involved in a violent struggle in Di Maggio's restaurant, in Ruthven Lane in the city's west end, as the premises closed late on Thursday.
Originally from England, she had lived in the southside's Queens Drive for five years. There is no connection between those inquiries Det Supt Ruaraidh NicolsonStrathclyde Police Police revealed the restaurant's takings were missing.
Ms Pachou, 25, who was originally from Greece, was thought to have been stabbed as the restaurant closed on Thursday night. Ms Pachou's body was found by a cleaner at about 0820 BST on Friday.
Det Ch Insp Michael Feighan of Strathclyde Police said it was an "horrific crime". Police want to trace an individual she spoke to on the phone, a short time before she was attacked.
Her employers described her as "beautiful, sparkling young woman who was a valuable and very well-liked member of our team". Det Ch Insp Michael Feighan said: "We established that before midnight she received a phone call at the restaurant which was overheard by other members of staff.
"She had arranged to meet a person and we would ask the person who made that call to contact us as a matter of urgency."
Officers investigating Moira Jones' murder said she had been visiting friends on Wednesday night, then drove home and parked her car.
Out of character
But they said her apparent decision to go into Queen's Park that night was completely out of character.
They want to know why that happened.
It has not yet been revealed how the businesswoman met her death but police said it was a "brutal and violent attack".
Her body was found by a park ranger at about 0945 BST on Thursday.
Det Supt Ruaraidh Nicolson, from Strathclyde Police, said 198 officers were working on both cases.
"There is no connection between those inquiries," he said.
"As part of the overall investigation so far we have carried out painstaking forensic examinations and that has taken quite some time."
He said inquiries were ongoing to establish the last movements of the two women.
