Alongside the 72-year-old retired broadcaster was Sir Stuart Rose, chief executive of Marks and Spencer. Sir Michael, 72, who retired from his show at the end of last year, said his knighthood was a "very great honour".
Nuala O'Loan, former Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, was also due to officially became a dame. Also knighted was Marks & Spencer chief executive Sir Stuart Rose, 59, who has been credited with turning round the fortunes of the High Street giant.
The titles were announced in the New Year's Honours List. Other famous faces included singer Kylie Minogue and ex-England rugby coach Brian Ashton. RAF helicopter pilot Flt Lt Michelle Goodman, 31, became the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Parkinson learned of his knighthood just two weeks after his final show. She flew her Merlin helicopter under fire from mortars and rocket-propelled grenades to pick up seriously injured serviceman Rifleman Stephen Vause in the southern Iraqi city of Basra last year.
He described it as "a great honour" and said he felt "fantastic, wonderful". Flt Lt Goodman said: "It's one of those things that you look at afterwards and go 'wow', but at the time it was just a case of getting on with the job."
Sir Stuart, 58, who was credited with reviving the fortunes of Marks and Spencer, said his honour was "as much for everyone at M&S as it is for me". Medical advice
Also being invested on Wednesday are Sir Nigel Hamilton, head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, and Sir Richard Stagg, British High Commissioner to India. Bombardier Paul Greenwood, 24, of 19 Regiment Royal Artillery, was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in Afghanistan last year.
TV doctor Christopher Steele, from ITV1's This Morning programme, received an MBE for services to general medical practice and broadcasting. Bomb disposal expert Warrant Officer class 2 James Wadsworth, of the Royal Logistic Corps, received a Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for defusing a 120lb device outside Basra hospital.

Tony Blair's spokesman while he was prime minister, Tom Kelly, was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath.
