One member of New York City’s emergency medical services was killed and another critically injured when someone stole their ambulance and ran them over in the Bronx on Thursday night, the authorities said. A law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the episode was still under investigation, said two female emergency medical technicians were on duty. It was not clear if they were responding to an emergency call.
A man, who was known to the police because of numerous encounters they had with him, jumped onto the back of the ambulance, the official said.
The workers got out to investigate, the official said, and “as they get out, this guy jumps in the cab and backs over them.”
The official said the man struck some parked cars and one of the medical workers was trapped beneath the ambulance.
The man drove the ambulance about 75 feet away and then hit some other parked cars. An officer with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority quickly got out of her vehicle and took the man into custody until police officers arrived, the official said.
