Supt Oz Billings, from Merseyside Police, said: "Both the man and woman were taken to hospital but, despite the efforts of paramedics and hospital staff, they have both died.
"Officers are currently conducting interviews with witnesses, and the museum has been closed."
A spokesman for Merseyside Police confirmed the man and woman, who were visitors to the museum, knew each other.
He added that the woman's injuries were not self-inflicted.
