To the Editor:

“Trump Says He Did Not Record Comey” (news article, June 23) discussed widespread speculation as to why President Trump implied that his post-inauguration private conversation with James Comey had been taped. But why he would do such a thing shouldn’t be a mystery.

Habitual liars find it hard to believe that others don’t also easily lie. It was natural for Mr. Trump to believe that Mr. Comey would lie to exonerate himself and to implicate Mr. Trump, as the president probably would have, had he been in Mr. Comey’s shoes. The idea that Mr. Comey would just tell the truth probably never crossed his mind.
