A Manchester derby in southeast Texas in the month of July? Sounds about right. Welcome everyone to tonight’s pre-season friendly between Manchester United and Manchester City in something called the International Champions Cup, a exhibition competition that’s now in its fifth year. Who among us could forget where they were when United first won this trophy back in 2014 with a 3-1 win over Liverpool?
All joking aside, exhibitions like these are the football equivalent of the tennis hit-and-giggle: mostly light-hearted exercises in brand-building and cobweb-shedding that will no doubt please the masses who turn out to NRG Stadium, the 72,220-seat home of the NFL’s Houston Texans.
Kickoff is just over 40 minutes away. Stay tuned and we’ll be back with the team sheets directly.
