Barcelona attack: Suspect says bigger attack was planned Barcelona attack: Suspects 'planned to hit key monuments'
(35 minutes later)
One of the alleged Barcelona plotters has admitted a bigger attack was planned, judicial sources say. The cell behind the Barcelona van attack had planned to use explosives against monuments including the city's Sagrada Familia cathedral, a suspect has told a Madrid court.
Mohamed Houli Chemlal was testifying in the Madrid high court, where the four surviving suspects are appearing. Mohamed Houli Chemlal is one of four surviving suspects giving evidence.
He was injured in an accidental blast that reduced a house to rubble in the town of Alcanar last Wednesday. The group's plans were scaled back when a house packed with bomb-making equipment blew up the day before.
Assailants went on to kill 15 people and injure more than 100 in a series of attacks in and around Barcelona the following day and early on Friday. Houli Chemlal was injured in the accidental blast that reduced the house to rubble in the town of Alcanar.
Eight members of the alleged cell are dead - two were killed in the Alcanar explosion, and six were later shot by police. The Alcanar explosion came the day before Thursday's Barcelona attack in which a van was driven at speed down the main Las Ramblas boulevard, killing 13 and injuring more than 100.
The last suspect to be killed was Moroccan-born Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, believed to be the driver of a van which tore down Barcelona's Las Ramblas boulevard, leaving 13 people dead. Judicial sources quoted Houli Chemlal as telling the court a much bigger series of attacks had been planned.
Assailants killed a total of 15 people in the van attack, the stabbing of a driver whose car was commandeered shortly afterwards, and a car attack in the resort of Cambrils hours later.

Judicial sources say he admitted a bigger attack using explosives had been planned. Spain's El Mundo newspaper reports Houli Chemlal telling the court the iconic Sagrada Familia cathedral was one of several targets. The four suspects have been charged in Madrid with terrorist murder.
Investigating judge Fernando Andreu was expected to read out the charges including terrorism, murder and possession of arms.

A cache of 120 gas canisters was found at the destroyed Alcanar house and the blast is believed to have prompted the plotters to change the nature of the attack. Driss Oukabir, whose brother Moussa was among suspects killed after the Cambrils attack, has also given evidence to the Madrid court.
Two other suspects were killed in the explosion, including Abdelbaki Es Satty, the Moroccan imam from the town of Ripoll thought to have been a radicalising influence on the suspects. According to judicial sources, he has changed his story to say that he admits renting vehicles used in the attacks but thought they were to be used for a house-move.
Five suspects were shot dead as they drove a car at pedestrians in the resort town of Cambril only hours after the Barcelona attack. A Spanish woman was killed in the Cambrils attack. Under earlier police interrogation, he is said to have maintained that his brother Moussa hired the Las Ramblas van using documents stolen from him.
A Spanish man was stabbed to death soon after the Las Ramblas van attack when Abouyaaqoub escaped on foot and commandeered his vehicle.
