"You're better off concentrating on things like messaging and our effectiveness in getting our message across, and whether we were as effective as we could have been", Mr ap Iorwerth said.
"I will take my responsibility gladly as director of communications for the party."
He said BBC licence payers had received "value for money" from persistent questions by corporation journalists after he remarked in August he would "perhaps" one day wish to lead Plaid Cymru.
