Further human remains have been found by police in Edinburgh investigating the discovery of a head in a bag.

Police said forensic analysis would take place to see if the remains belonged to Heather Stacey, whose head was found in Newhaven on 31 December.

The latest find came as police carried out a search of undergrowth in the Granton area of the capital.

Alan Cameron, 54, from Edinburgh, has appeared in court in connection with the discovery of the remains.

Ms Stacey, 44, is believed to have died within the past two years and tests were ongoing to establish the exact circumstances.

It is understood she was not registered as a missing person.

Her badly decomposed head was found alongside bones in a blue Ikea bag in Hawthornvale.

Other bags found at the scene contained bones and "various materials".

Police then began searches in the West Granton Road and Granton View areas, about a mile from where Ms Stacey's head was discovered.

They have now confirmed that further remains were found.

A police spokesman said: "Detailed forensic analysis will take place in order to confirm the identity of the body parts recovered, and although the results will not be known for some time, we believe these to be Heather's remains.

"At this time we would like to reiterate our appeal for anyone who knew her to contact police as soon as possible."

Mr Cameron was charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice over the course of the past year. He is also charged with breach of the peace.

He made no plea or declaration during his appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday and has been remanded in custody.
