Two boaters reported missing in Chesapeake Bay, fire officials say Two boaters reported missing in Chesapeake Bay, fire officials say
(about 11 hours later)
Rescuers searched the Chesapeake Bay Thursday afternoon after two boaters were reported missing, Anne Arundel County fire officials said. Officials with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said they’re continuing to assist Friday morning in the search for two missing boaters in the Chesapeake Bay.
The search happened near Shady Side and involved rescuers from Maryland Natural Resources Police and Anne Arundel, who were called to the area about 4:30 p.m., fire officials said. The search effort was called off around nightfall, fire officials said. Capt. Erik Kornmeyer, a spokesman for the county fire department, said in a statement that they were searching for two people near Shadyside, Md., after a concerned person called authorities around 4:30 p.m. Thursday to say he saw two people in a “small canoe or kayak drifting in the bay” while at the Columbia Beach pier. Crews on boats and helicopters, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, helped in the search. The search went on until dark and resumed Friday.
A fire department spokesman said Maryland Natural Resources Police was the investigating agency and referred all questions to that department. Police did not return phone calls and an email late Thursday. The Maryland Natural Resources Police is the lead agency in the search. The Coast Guard said in a statement that the area they’re searching is near Herring Bay. They’re looking for a 41-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son. According to the Coast Guard, the caller said that the two were “seen struggling to return to shore in a canoe” and then were not seen again.
