Council puts lid on bottled water

A council claims it is saving more than £30,000 by cutting bottled water dispensers from many of its offices and using tap water for drinking instead.

Leeds City Council said it had cut by half all the bottled water points in its facilities and was looking to make further cuts.

Staff are being encouraged to bring either a glass from home to drink tap water or use recyclable paper cups.

A council spokesman said it was a waste of money and tap water was acceptable.

Councillor Richard Brett, deputy council leader, said: "There is no need for us to rely on water supplies being brought in from elsewhere when we have a perfectly drinkable supply from the tap.

"There is not just a financial cost to bottled water, there is also an environmental one and it is important that the council does everything it can to reduce waste and ensure it is as environmentally friendly as possible."
