The papers reportedly included names, addresses, contact telephone numbers and information about visiting arrangements for the children.
There were also apparently reports on the children's welfare, as well as details of their siblings and documents relating to personal information about the children's parents.

A Knowsley Council spokesman said: "This is an extremely regrettable incident.
