Roads near the site have been closed and a 200-metre exclusion zone has been put in place around the scene.
David Morrison, from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, said: "The warehouse contained a range of materials - unfortunately that included five acetylene cylinders which are quite unpredictable when exposed to fire.
"When crews arrived strong winds were fanning the flames.
"At one point the fireball was spreading across the top of the accommodation block for the elderly, so they had to be evacuated."
