It is not known how the fire started. South Wales Police said: "At approximately 5.30am on Monday, 29 June the fire service attended a report of a house fire at Addison Place in Port Talbot.
"On arrival at the scene a female was found deceased.
"South Wales Police is carrying out an investigation in conjunction with the fire service in order to establish the cause of the fire."

'Lovely woman'
Neighbours paid tribute to the dead woman - who has not yet been named by police - saying she was "lovely" but had not been well for some time.
Leanne Spong said: "The sirens woke me up and my mother came into my bedroom and I thought there was something wrong with our house.
"Then I looked out of my mum's bedroom window and we saw the sirens and the fire engine and everything."
Ms Spong added: "We all went down there from time to time to look after her because she wasn't able to look after herself.
"She was just lovely. There wasn't a bad bone in her body."
Family friend Helen James said: "A lovely woman - brilliant she was. [It's] really devastating. [She was] quiet and kept herself to herself."
