A second vessel found the man, who was airlifted to hospital, but it was too late to save him. The alarm was raised at 1940 GMT on Saturday after a crewman from the Aberdeen-registered motor vessel Margaret Jane was lost overboard.
The alarm was raised at about 1930 GMT on Saturday that a crewman from the Aberdeen-registered "Margaret Jane" was lost overboard. A search and rescue mission coordinated by Aberdeen Coastguard was launched and the crewman was rescued from the water after 45 minutes.
A helicopter from a nearby oil rig and 11 boats joined the search for the man, whose name has not been released. He was flown by helicopter to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary but later died.
He was found about 50 minutes after going overboard. Sympathies and condolences
A rescue helicopter took him to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he later died. The Margaret Jane had been carrying out guard duties for the oil and gas company ConocoPhilips at the time of the incident.
The vessel had been chartered by ACERGY - who had been contracted by the firm to finish some recently installed sub sea equipment.
ConocoPhilips managing director Archie Kennedy said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of the crew member and wish to express our sympathies and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues on the Margaret Jane.
"We and our contractors ACERGY, who had chartered the vessel, will be working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of this incident."
A police spokesman confirmed that enquiries were at an early stage and that the identity of the male would not be released until a formal identification had been made.
