'Priority' delivery for road salt

First Minister Carwyn Jones has defended the way the assembly government dealt with snow and icy conditions in Wales in recent weeks. He said salt to grit roads had not run out, and the assembly government had been sharing it with local councils. He told the Politics Show Wales that new supplies of salt would be delivered first to areas which need them most. Meanwhile, Mr Jones said help to find new jobs would be given to redundant workers at the south Wales Bosch plant. Mr Jones confirmed that in recent days the assembly government had clinched new supplies of road grit. We've secured a large delivery of salt that we'll be distributing to the local authorities across Wales on a priority basis First Minister Carwyn Jones "We have a supply of grit that we keep for the M4 and M48 because that's what we directly grit," he said. "We have also been sharing grit and salt where we can with local authorities to help them, and this week we've secured a large delivery of salt that we'll be distributing to the local authorities across Wales on a priority basis". Mr Jones said it was for local authorities to ensure that they had enough grit for their own roads, "but we are not in the situation where salt has run out". Mr Jones also told Sky's Sunday Live with Adam Boulton that his government would do all it could to help the 900 workers being laid off in 2011 at the Bosch motor parts manufacturer in the Vale of Glamorgan. He called the loss of jobs "very, very significant" and added: "A lot of work was put in to trying to persuade Bosch to stay in Wales, but that work was unsuccessful. "The next step now will be to make sure that we work closely both with the company and with Unite, the union who represent workers in the plant, to provide training opportunities, to provide employment opportunities for those people working at the plant. "Whenever we've had job losses in the past, what we've done is send a team in to help people working there, to see what opportunities might be available for them elsewhere." |
