Tributes have been paid to a promising young athlete who died when a car overturned.

Danny Evans, 18, from Connah's Quay, Flintshire, died when a black Renault Clio crashed at Sealand on Monday. Three others were hurt, one seriously.

The teenager had represented Wales in the high jump and won a sports scholarship to Deeside College.

David Jones, the college principal, said he was an "outstanding athlete" with a "great life ahead of him".

He added: "Everyone involved at Deeside College was devastated to hear about Danny.

"He was an outstanding athlete, and joined Deeside College as one of our elite sports scholarship students in 2007, following his remarkable achievements as a high jumper, starting at Connah's Quay High School and at a Welsh national level.

"He made good progress at Deeside College, and was due to complete his National Diploma in Sports Studies this year.

"He had a great life ahead of him, and this has tragically been taken away.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult and sad time."

The car crashed on the A548 near Yew Tree Farm on Monday and North Wales Police were alerted at 2122 GMT.

Mr Evans was pronounced dead at the scene and three other males were taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital, one of them with serious injuries.
