His family have been informed but neither they nor the man have given authority for his identity to be publicly released, police said.
Inspector Roy Apps, who led the inquiry, said: "We are grateful to the media for the publicity which has resulted in our solving this mystery."
The mystery began when a passer-by spotted the man soaking wet and unconscious on the beach.
He had a few personal belongings with him but nothing which could identify him and he had no cash.
Police said he had a "happy, positive, cheerful personality" and was helpful with their inquiry.
'Cheerful personality'
He gave two names but it was thought these were "products of his imagination" - but given in good faith.
Detectives decided to release his photograph to media outlets after exhausting other lines of inquiry.
The so-called piano man was found on a beach in Kent
The case has drawn comparisons to the discovery of a man, dubbed the Piano Man, in Kent in 2005.
He was found wandering aimlessly near the beach on the Isle of Sheppey wearing a dripping wet suit and tie.
The man did not say a word after he was picked up by police and taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham.
When staff gave him a pen and paper in the hope he would write his name, he drew highly-detailed pictures of a grand piano.
When his social worker showed him a piano in the hospital chapel, it was reported he played "beautiful" classical music.
After several months, he claimed his memory had returned and it emerged he was Andreas Grassl, from Germany.
