Station reopens after major fire
(about 3 hours later) | |
Cambridge railway station has reopened after a major fire nearby forced it to close, affecting services.
The fire started in the early hours of Saturday at the disused Spillers site where two buildings were alight.
More than 70 firefighters tackled the fire and a spokesman said there were fears the buildings could collapse.
Ana Vujisic, who lives nearby, said: "I was woken up by an explosion as our whole building shock when the roof of the Mill collapsed."
Cambridge railway station and Station Road were shut for a time and rail services were not stopping in the city while firefighters tackled the blaze.

Cambridge assistant chief fire officer Neil Newberry said earlier: "There were two buildings heavily involved - the heat was quite intense coming off the buildings.
"There were 40-50ft high flames you could see leaping out into the sky so it was quite an impressive sight.
"The fire is almost out in both buildings, but the bigger problem was fear of collapse. We were expecting the building to collapse.
"One of the buildings is still very precarious, still very unsafe."
There is no indication at this stage as to the cause of the fire. |
