(about 9 hours later)
Police investigating the murder of a baby found dumped in a bag at a railway station in Hampshire are urging the newborn girl's mother to contact them. Police investigating the murder of a baby found dumped at a Hampshire railway station have released an image of a plastic bag the body was found in.
The body was discovered by a cleaner emptying bins at the front of Fleet railway station on Wednesday. The newborn baby girl's body was found by a cleaner emptying bins at the front of Fleet railway station on Wednesday.
Hampshire Police said the girl had "suffered significant injuries that were not caused during childbirth". She had suffered "significant" injuries which police said were not caused during childbirth.
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London later. Detectives have renewed their appeal to the baby's mother to contact them urgently and to seek medical attention.
Following the discovery an ambulance was called but the baby was pronounced dead at the scene. Floral tributes have been laid by members of the public at the station.
Initial investigations found that she had only recently been born and had then sustained the injuries. The infant's body had been wrapped up and hidden inside a Morrisons supermarket re-usable carrier bag.
We are also still trying to trace any witnesses who were at the train station yesterday morning and may have seen someone carrying a bag, or depositing a bag in the bins Det Supt Jason Hogg We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen someone carrying a yellow bag near to Fleet train station, or saw someone putting it in the bin on Wednesday morning Det Supt Jason Hogg
Det Supt Jason Hogg said: "Our absolute priority remains trying to trace this baby's mother as a matter of urgency. Inside was a pink Kaos plastic carrier bag, a pink drawstring material bag and a pair of size 12 jean shorts.
"She will have very recently given birth and may need medical attention herself. Police said initial investigations found the infant had only recently been born.
"I would appeal directly to her to please go to her nearest hospital or call 999 and ask for an ambulance. We can ensure she receives the help and care she needs. They also believe the mother could be from much further afield than the Fleet area because the station has links to London, the south east of England and the West Country.
"If you are a relative or friend of the baby's mother and are worried about contacting the police, I would like to reassure you that we share your concerns for her well-being. You can contact us in confidence and we will treat her sensitively. Det Supt Jason Hogg said there was a strong possibility the Denim Co skinny fit jeans, which had been cut into shorts, belonged to the mother.
"We are also still trying to trace any witnesses who were at the train station yesterday morning and may have seen someone carrying a bag, or depositing a bag in the bins. He also said there were only four Kaos stores in southern England, and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
"We are working with our colleagues at British Transport Police to check CCTV footage and would ask anyone with any information to get in touch." "From our inquiries so far, we believe that the Morrisons carrier bag was used to carry the baby's body and other contents and we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen someone carrying a yellow bag near to Fleet train station, or saw someone putting it in the bin on Wednesday morning.
He said the mother could be from much further afield than the Fleet area because the station has links to London, the south east of England and the West Country. Police continue to hunt for clues as members of the public left floral tributes
"What is significant about these jeans is that they are homemade shorts, rather than shop bought ones, so again someone may know a friend or family member that this could be.
"The pink Kaos carrier bag is significant as there are only four of these stores in the south of England.
"Again, this carrier bag was found within the contents of the Morrisons bag so it may help identify the person who left the baby at the station."
He said the pink drawstring bag was "quite distinctive", and asked anyone who recognised any of the items to contact police.
He again appealed directly to the mother to "please go to her nearest hospital or call 999 and ask for an ambulance".
A post-mortem examination to establish how the baby died was due to be carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London on Thursday afternoon
