Police have launched an investigation after the body of a man was found in a Darlington churchyard. The death of a man, whose body was found in a churchyard in Darlington, is being treated as suspicious, police have said.
George Akers, 59, had been sleeping rough in the grounds of St Cuthbert's, police said. The man, believed to have been in his 50s, was discovered on Saturday in St Cuthberts churchyard.
His body was discovered on Saturday. A post-mortem examination found he had died from serious internal injuries. Officers have placed a cordon around the scene and an investigation is under way.
A Durham Police spokesman said the death was being treated as suspicious. The area is cordoned off and a major investigation is under way, he added. The results of a post mortem examination are expected to be released by Durham Police later.
Mr Akers was well known in the town and had been sleeping rough for several weeks, police said.
