Talks to avert Tube strike fail Three-day Tube strike called off
(20 minutes later)
Last ditch talks to avert a three-day strike by thousands of Tube workers next week have broken down. A three-day strike by thousands of Tube workers has been called off, according to the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union.
The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said 2,000 of its members employed by maintenance firm Metronet would walk out from 1800 BST on Sunday. The RMT had threatened to go ahead with industrial action on Sunday in a row over the transfer of 250 jobs.
Union officials and Metronet bosses have trying to resolve the row over the transfer of 250 jobs. Metronet, which maintains two-thirds of the network, will no longer send staff to work for parent company Bombardier, according to the RMT.
Metronet, which maintains two-thirds of the network, said any industrial action would be unjustified and unwarranted. The breakthrough came during a full shareholders meeting on Friday.
Massive effect
London Underground (LU) said the action would not bring the Tube network to a standstill.
But the RMT said the industrial action would have an immediate and massive impact on services.
The dispute centres on plans to transfer around 250 staff to Bombardier Transportation to help introduce new trains and improve reliability.
The union claimed the move would hit workers' employment conditions and could hit safety, but this has been strongly denied.
RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "We have tried everything to reach a settlement but it is now quite clear that Bombardier is pulling Metronet's strings.
"Metronet effectively walked out of today's talks telling us that an agreement we negotiated a year ago was not worth the paper it was written on."
The strike will end at 1800 BST on Wednesday.
