Snow warning for south and eastern parts of Scotland Snow and ice warning across Scotland
(about 21 hours later)
The Met Office has issued warnings for weekend snow across many parts of southern and eastern Scotland. An amber weather warning has been issued across much of Scotland as snow sweeps in during the day.
The severe weather alerts run from 0600 on Saturday to midday on Sunday. The Met Office's "be prepared" warning has been for issued for south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders, Central, Tayside and Fife, as well as the Grampian region.
Snow is expected in the east early on Saturday, with another band moving slowly across the south in the afternoon. The weather alerts run until midnight on Saturday.
Accumulations of about 5cm (2in) are expected, even at low levels, and people are being advised that there is the potential for travel disruption. The Met Office warned that snow would give way to ice in many parts of the country overnight.
The first warning issued by the Met Office covered most of the southern Scottish Borders and south-eastern parts of Dumfries and Galloway from noon on Saturday and was extended to run until the same time the following day. Into Sunday, an amber warning has been issued for ice in Strathclyde, south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders, Central Scotland, Tayside and Fife, and Grampian.
A subsequent alert was issued for earlier on Saturday across the Highlands, Grampian, Central, Tayside and Fife. The Met Office said a band of snow would clear on Sunday morning.
Up to 10cm (4in) of snow is forecast for higher ground in those areas. Behind this, clearing skies would lead to widespread icy patches forming.
The snow is expected to turn increasingly to rain as the day progresses. BBC Scotland weather presenter Gillian Smart said rain, sleet and snow would clear away, leaving a widespread risk of ice on untreated roads.
The warnings come after one of the coldest nights of the winter so far. On Sunday, after an icy start, there will be some brighter weather.
Temperatures in parts of the UK plunged to -11C (12F) overnight, with Braemar in Aberdeenshire among the places worst affected. It will feel less cold with lighter winds, however, rain and hill snow will push in across the west.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said the government's resilience team would be in regular contact with the Met Office, police, and road and rail operators.Transport Minister Keith Brown said the government's resilience team would be in regular contact with the Met Office, police, and road and rail operators.
