An amber weather warning has been issued across much of Scotland as snow sweeps in during the day. Forecasters have warned Scottish roads are likely to be icy on Sunday after a night of cold temperatures.
The Met Office's "be prepared" warning has been for issued for south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders, Central, Tayside and Fife, as well as the Grampian region. The warning came as motorists were urged to take extra care as snow flurries hit parts of Scotland.
The weather alerts run until midnight on Saturday. Snow fell on higher ground in the Highlands and southern uplands, while 5cm (2in) was recorded at Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway.
The Met Office warned that snow would give way to ice in many parts of the country overnight. Snow affected the A7 north of Langholm and the M74 but police said all roads were passable with care.

It will feel less cold with lighter winds, however, rain and hill snow will push in across the west.

He said: "Frontline and patrols vehicles are being deployed across the network and on routes that are likely to be affected by snow. Gritters will continue to operate until the snow has passed and will be further supported by additional vehicles.

Mr Brown added that such warnings were "fairly common" over the winter months but the public should continue to check travel bulletins or the Traffic Scotland website for the latest advice."
