A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A 41-year-old man was cautioned today for perverting the course of justice."
Mr Sheringham, whose professional career spans 23 years, has made more than 800 appearances for club and country, and left West Ham at the end of the season in May.
Earlier this month he signed a one-year contract at Colchester United.
Sheringham won 51 caps for England, scoring 11 goals, and was part of the team which reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in 1996.
