A man who admitted stabbing his girlfriend and son to death has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The bodies of Lisa Clay, 40, and Joseph Chadwick, six, were found at their home in Lowlands Road, Bolton-le-Sands, Lancashire on 9 April.

Paul Chadwick, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Preston Crown Court.

He was sentenced to a hospital order and will be held for an unlimited time.

'Absolutely tragic'

Police found Joseph's body in his bedroom and his mother was discovered in the hallway.

Chadwick was also inside the house with a number of self-inflicted injuries.

Officers visited their home after a call from a concerned family member.

Det Supt Paul Withers said: "This was an absolutely tragic case involving the death of a woman and a young child in horrific circumstances.

"Our thoughts remain with those affected by this most appalling case."

Chadwick is also subject to a restriction order under section 41 of the Mental Health Act 1983.
