Officers were called to reports of a man attacking the woman at a shop in Southgate Street, Gloucester, at about 5.50pm on Tuesday. The 20-year-old victim, who was attacked in Fringe Benefits and La Bella Beauty in Southgate Street, Gloucester, is understood to have known the arrested man.
A spokesman for Gloucestershire police said: "A 22-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder in the early hours of this morning. Officers were called to reports of a man attacking a woman at about 5.50pm on Tuesday.
"He is currently in police custody." She was rushed to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, but efforts to save her were unsuccessful.
The ambulance service attended the incident and took the 20-year-old victim to Gloucestershire Royal hospital, although efforts to save her were unsuccessful. It is unclear whether the woman was an employee or a customer of the salon.
The spokesman said next of kin and the coroner had been informed. A white tent has been erected outside the building as forensics teams continue their investigations.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or had any information was asked to call 101, quoting incident 340 of 18 February. Gloucestershire police said: "A 22-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder in the early hours of this morning. He is currently in police custody."
The police spokesman said next of kin and the coroner have been informed.
Care worker Alec Rosam, 30, who lives across the road from the salon, told the Gloucester Citizen: "I heard some screaming and shouting coming from the direction of the hairdresser's about 5pm.
"I didn't think much about it at the time because there is a B&B hotel opposite me where there is often trouble.
"But when I came out of my flat later there were four police cars and an ambulance outside the hairdresser's."
