Man held after woman dies in Gloucester stabbing Tributes paid to murdered Gloucester hairdresser Hollie Gazzard
(about 1 hour later)
Detectives are questioning a man on suspicion of murder after a woman was stabbed to death in a beauty salon. Tributes have been paid to a hairdresser who was fatally stabbed in a beauty salon on Tuesday night.
The 20-year-old victim, who was attacked in Fringe Benefits and La Bella Beauty in Southgate Street, Gloucester, is understood to have known the arrested man. Hollie Gazzard, 20, died following the attack at her workplace, Fringe Benefits and La Bella Beauty in Gloucester.
Officers were called to reports of a man attacking a woman at about 5.50pm on Tuesday. Police were called to the salon, in the city centre, at around 5.50pm following reports that a man had attacked a woman.
She was rushed to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, but efforts to save her were unsuccessful. Gazzard was taken to Gloucestershire Royal hospital, where she died.
It is unclear whether the woman was an employee or a customer of the salon. A 22-year-old man was arrested in Gloucester at 2.30am on Wednesday and is in custody at Cheltenham police station.
A white tent has been erected outside the building as forensics teams continue their investigations. Acting Chief Inspector Neil Smith of Gloucestershire police said it was thought Gazzard knew her alleged attacker.
Gloucestershire police said: "A 22-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder in the early hours of this morning. He is currently in police custody." "Gloucester is a safe place to live, work and visit and this type of incident is rare," he said.
The police spokesman said next of kin and the coroner have been informed. "Officers are still in the area carrying out inquiries. If you were in the area and saw something, we would ask you to contact police as soon as possible.
Care worker Alec Rosam, 30, who lives across the road from the salon, told the Gloucester Citizen: "I heard some screaming and shouting coming from the direction of the hairdresser's about 5pm. "We're also working to put those who were in the salon at the time of the incident in contact with the relevant support agencies, as we understand what they saw would have had a significant impact on them."
"I didn't think much about it at the time because there is a B&B hotel opposite me where there is often trouble. A force spokesman said next of kin and the coroner had been informed of Gazzard's death.
"But when I came out of my flat later there were four police cars and an ambulance outside the hairdresser's." Forensics officers continued to examine the salon, which has been taped off. Floral tributes have been left by the police cordon.
On Fringe Benefits' website, Gazzard is described as a hair designer for the salon. An accompanying description, apparently written by her, states that she began working as a hairdresser aged 16, after being offered an apprenticeship in a Gloucester salon.
The description states: "I am a very passionate individual and take great pride in my work so can offer all my clients a unique professional and personal experience. I am a fully qualified and experienced level 3 hair designer, with a blend of in-salon and academy training.
"I have recently worked on a cruise ship which was an enlightening experience but was not for me. I am now back in my home city and very excited to join Fringe Benefits and be part of their lovely team.
"I enjoy spending my free time with friends and family and going on shopping trips. I also like to keep fit and own a Pomeranian which keeps me on my toes."
Gazzard's friends have taken to social networking sites to pay tribute.
Writing on Twitter, Stephanie Anne wrote: "RIP Hollie Gazzard such a beautiful girl!! Gonna be truly missed babe xxxxxxx." Shaun James tweeted: "May your soul rest in paradise Hollie Gazzard. Such a beautiful girl. R.I.P x."
