The car was badly damaged. Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them. SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said the attack "bears the hallmarks of the dissident group formerly known as Republican Action Against Drugs".
"It's leading up to the local government and European elections, where they're trying to take the high moral ground and acting as a policing unit in the city," he said.
"The vast majority of people in the city will again be using the ballot box to say 'these incidents are not done in our name and we want them to stop'."
