Durham Police said it had started a murder investigation and a 22-year-old man is currently in police custody. Durham Police said it had not been able to carry out a formal identification, and a post-mortem examination would be carried out later.
A stretch of land in the area has been cordoned off by police and a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out later. A 22-year-old local man is being questioned by detectives at Peterlee police station.
