Protest causes Severn Bridge and M4 hold-ups
(35 minutes later) | |
Protesters have held up traffic by stopping in the middle lane on the westbound side of the M4 Second Severn Crossing.
Gwent Police said the incident involves a number of protesters and an estimated 10 vehicles.
The group are Iraqi Kurds protesting against ISIS and were moved to a safe position after about 20 minutes.
The protest is now taking place at the side of the toll booths and is expected to end shortly.
Traffic Wales reports "severe" delays between J22 Pilning and J23 Rogiet which are on either side of the bridge.
Gwent Police Insp Mikah Hassell said: "It is important that, in our planning, we balance the rights of protesters with those affected, in this case motorists, all the while ensuring that everybody is kept safe which is our priority.
"We have adequate resources, together with our partner agencies, to deal with all eventualities and our protest liaison officers are in place continually engaging with protesters to ensure the protest stays safe and peaceful."
Police said they have been liaising with the owners of the Second Severn Crossing to ensure that toll booths are kept open to ensure traffic continues to flow freely. |
