One trooper on Branstad's security detail, Steve Lawrence, said Branstad has been in good health in recent weeks. "He's been energetic, nothing out of the ordinary," Lawrence said, upon arriving. "I was definitely not expecting that. I'm going to go down there and see how he's doing. Hopefully he's well."
