Sudan has said that the killing was an isolated incident not linked to terrorism, despite a claim of responsibility posted on a militant website by a group calling itself Ansar al-Tawhid. In August Sudanese security forces said they had broken up a plot to attack the French, British, US and UN missions in Khartoum.
The group was reportedly discovered in a house in the capital after some of its explosives went off by accident.
At the time the authorities said they had seized arms, explosives and arrested most of the plotters, although a number had managed to get away.
