Nobody knew more about the pain of institutional life for young people than Spencer Millham, but he laced his observations with great humour. I recall him telling an audience that most murders take place either in the kitchen or the bedroom. On the whole, he continued, partners can best protect themselves against the possibility of domestic homicide by having a takeaway meal on their own in the front room.
