A typhoid outbreak is threatening displaced Palestinian residents from the Yarmouk refugee camp outside Damascus, Syria, the United Nations reported Wednesday. Christopher Gunness, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, said that medical teams had confirmed six typhoid cases on Tuesday among Palestinians in the Yalda district near Yarmouk, and that five more cases had been confirmed on Wednesday. “We fear this is the tip of the iceberg,” Mr. Gunness said. The agency has been unable to gain access to Yarmouk since March 28, just before Islamic State militants seized control of part of it, but has been able to help some residents who have fled. Typhoid is a contagious bacterial infection, often transmitted through contaminated water. |
