Maryland state police said the shooting happened on Friday evening in Cecil County. Police said the trooper was in uniform and driving a marked patrol car through a shopping centre parking lot when he saw 30-year-old Charles S Hall of North East, Maryland.

Police said the trooper, Daryl Brackett, knew Hall was wanted on a theft warrant. Brackett approached Hall and attempted to arrest him, police said, but Hall resisted and a struggle ensued.

Police said Hall got into his car during the struggle and attempted to drive away – and that Brackett fired at him. Hall was pronounced dead at the scene.
