Two small planes have crashed at an airshow in Switzerland, killing at least one person, police have said. Two light planes have crashed at an airshow in Switzerland, killing one of the pilots, Swiss police have said.
Two of three aircraft flying in formation crashed mid-morning on Sunday, police in Basel-Landschaft said. Two of three C-42b aircraft from Germany were flying in formation and crashed after they touched mid-air on Sunday morning, police in Basel-Landschaft said.
Swiss newspaper Blick reported that one pilot managed to escape by parachute. The automatic rescue system of the first plane failed to activate and the 50-year-old pilot died when his aircraft crashed into a barn in the hillside village of Dittingen. Nobody else was injured.
The incident happened in Dittingen, near Basel. The other pilot escaped unharmed by parachute, while the third plane landed safely.
Police photos showed debris from the two aircraft scattered in the village, near Basel.
The cause of the accident is being investigated, police said.
